Congress 2011 On the Land

A truly unique experience was had by the 126 delegates that travelled to Iqaluit from July 13 to 17 for the CSLA Congress. Elder Martha Michael and Auyu Peter opened the Congress with the traditional lighting of the Qudliq lamp, introducing us to the Inuit culture and welcoming us to share in the beauty around us. The congress events reinforced their message, bringing the delegates and community together on many occasions, and allowing us to taste and see the best of the culture. The many memories from Congress 2011 will be with us for many years.

On the first evening of the Congress a local performance troupe told us a the legend of the Snowy Owl and Raven, performing in the open air on a rock outcropping in Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park. Through throat singing, drum dancing and song, the story of adaptation reminded us to be aware of the fragility of the landscape, and how our resilience is demonstrated through our interaction with the land and all of its creatures. This moment, like many others, was informative but also very fun. Throughout the congress the delegates had smiling faces.

The CSLA and our congress hosts, the Nunavut Association of Landscape Architects, are working together to create a digital archive of the events and presentations from the congress. We look forward to sharing more information on this initiative with you in the future.

Accomplished Landscape Architect Donna Hinde BES, MLA, FCSLA wrote the following about the current issue of CSLA’s Landscape Paysages magazine focused on Young Professionals:
I just received the Winter 2011 magazine. I glanced through it, then stopped what I was doing at the office and read it cover to cover. Outstanding issue! Our profession is in excellent hands with the “under 40s”.
